Historical Background

GziTibet is the cardle of tibetan civilization. According to Paleolithic Gziand Neolithic finds unearthed by geologists and archaeologists, the ancenstors of the tibetans wre the indigenous people dwelling on the tibetan Palteau as early as the 3rd century BC. the emerge as the present Tibetan people after longtime evolution.

Legend has that in the 3rd century BC, the" Son of Heaven" wa found in the Yarlung river valley. People called him Nyentri Tsanpo and unanimously made him head of all tribes. He became the first Tsanpo(God King) of the tribe of Tubo. In early 7th centruy, Songtsen Gampo made significant headway through conquering a number of internal and external forces, and annexing neighboring tribes. He found the Tubo dynasty, the first dynasty in the history of Tibet. The dynasty reached the height of its power druing the reigh of Trisong Detsen. Its domain extended to cover part of Nepal, India, Kashmir, Bangal and Burma(Myanmar)

Matrimony alliances with the Tang Empire of Chian druing the 7th and 8th centuries promoted political and economic interflow between Tibet and China. An amicable relationship was established between the two regimes. Buddism was persecuted by King Langdharma during the 9th century. langdharma was soon assassinated. His sons fought over the throne, causing internal faction. Peasants and slaves then seized this chance to launch large scale upheaveals. The dynasty fell apart completely in AD 877. In the following three centuries, Tibet was ruled by a number of warring principalities.

In mid 13th century, the Khon family, supported by the Mongolian emperor of the Yuan dynasty in China, founded the Sakya regime. Tibet thus came under the overlordship of Yuan China.  By the end of the Yuan dynasty, inernal contention in the Sakya regime gave the Kagyu order the chance to rise. The Sakya Monastery was captured in 1354 and the Sakya regime was replaced by the pagmodru regime established by the Kagyu order. The Pagmodru ruled Tibet for 264 years and was then replaced by the Karma Sub-order of the Kagyu order.

In 1409, with the support of Pagmodru regime, Tsong Khapa called for a grand congregation of all monks and founded the Gandden Monastery, making the formal establishment of the strictly disciplined Gelug order(Yellow Sect). Among his many disciples were Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama, who were considered the two principle disciples of Tsong Khapa. At that time, Tibet was ruled by the Karma regime and the Tibetan king was hostile to the Yellow Sect. In 1641, the Fifth Dalai Lama and Fourth Panchen Lama after a secret meeting, sent someone to Qinghai to call for military assistance from the Mongolian warlord Gushri Khan, a follower of the Yellow Sect. Gushri Khan swept into Tibet and the Karma regime was overthrown in the next year.

With the support of gushiri Khan ,the Ganden Phrodrang regime was established by the Fifth Dalai Lama and later recognized by Qing China. The Qing court sent representatives know as Ambans to Tibet to superintend the affairs there and to reinforce Qing China's overlordship in the region. After the fall of the Qing dynasty and the establishment of the China Republic in 1911, an office was set up in Lhasa to administer Tibet. In May 1951, The Agreement to Measures for the Peaceful Liberationof Tibet was signed between the People's Repulic of China and Tibet. This was followd by the fled of the Tibetan government which remains outside the country for nearly half a century. Hope that with the blessings of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, the problem could be solved with satisfaciton.
