The capital of Yunan is Kunming, there are 40.4 million population, 394£¬000 sq km area. Yunan is without doubt one of the most alluring travel destinations in China. It's the most geographically varied of all of China's provinces, with terrains as widely divers as tropical rainforest and icy Tibetan highlands. It is also the sixth largest province in China and home to a third of all China's ethnic minorities nearly 50%of the province is non Han and half of all China's plant and animal species. If you could only go to one province, this might well be it.
Yunnan is also well know for its mild climate year round its name, refereeing to this reputation, means " Soth of the Clouds". The provincial capital, Kunming, is similarly refereed to as the " Spring City". Despite the best government efforts, numerous pockets of the province have successfully resisted Chinese influence and exhibit strong local identities. Even Kunming has a flavor all its own that seems more than half a world away from Beijing, although this gap is in danger of being bridges by rapid economic growth..
Nicknames are affixed to everything in China, and Yunnan holds the vast majority. Since the province contains the nation's highest number of species of flora and fauna-including 2500 varieties of wild flowers and plants, it has been given monikers such as " Kingdom of Plants or Animals", Garden of Heavenly Marvelous Flowers and Hometown of Perfume.
History
When Qin Dynasty and the Han emperors first held tentative sway over the south-west, Yunnan was occupied by a large number of non- Chinese aboriginal peoples who laced cohesive political organization.
By the 7th century AD, however, the Bai people had established a powerful kingdom, Nanzhao, south of Dali. Initially allying itself to the Chinese against the Tibetans, this kingdom extended its power until, in the middle of the 8th century, it was able to challenge and defeat the tang armies. It took control of ta large slice of the southwest and established itself as a fully independent entity, dominating the trade routs from China to India and Burma.
The Nanzhao kingdom fell in the 10th century and was replaced by the kingdom of Dali, and independent state which lasted until it was overrun by the Mongolas in the mid 13th century. After 15 centuries of resistance to northern rule, this part of the south-west was finally integrated into the empire as the province of Yunan.
Even so it remained an isolated frontier region with scattered Chinese garrisons and settlements in the valleys and basins, a mixed aboriginal population occupying the highlands and various Dai minorities along the Langcang Jiang(Mekong River)
Like the rest of the south-west, Yunan was always one of the first regions to break with the northern government. During China's countless political purges, fallen officials often found themselves exiled here, which added to the province's rebellious character. It is a province of 40 million people, including a veritalbel constellation of minorities: the Zhuang, Hui, Yi, Miao, Tibetans, Mongols, Yao, Bai, Haini, Dai, Lisu, Lahu, Wa, Naxi, Jingpo, Bulang, Pumi, Nu, Achang Benglong, Jinuo and Dulong.
