Mosques(Qingzhen si)
The local officials have focused on the left-out Muslim community and their mosque. The oldest of the lot, the 400-year-old Nancheng Qingzhen Gusi(Nancheng Muslim Ancient Mosque was rapped down in 1997 in order to build a larger version.
Completed in 1998, the new mosque sites immediately north of the Kunming department store at 51 Zhengyi Lu. Looking vaguely like a Las Vegas casino, it has the appearance of a typical white-tiled office building topped by bluish domes. Not too far away is a lively strip of lots and lots of Muslim restaurants. To get there, walk north-west past the Chuncheng Jiulou and then bear left a half-block to a small alley.
There's another mosque nearby, wedged between Huguo Lu and Hongyuan Jie; it's too had a friendly army of workers renovating it at last check..
